Google contacted many publishers by email this week announcing an upcoming change in how AdSense ads work. Right now the entire AdSense ad is clickable, including the background. Starting this Friday (?), only the title and URL will be clickable. This is supposedly to decrease "accidental clicks". This will probably result in a lower CTR for almost all publishers, but it will result in a better ROI for the advertisers and thus hopefully higher bids (or at least that's google's spin on it).

Here's the old and new:

I'm still up in the air on this. I'm not real happy with google right now because they've rolled out a TON of changes recently and some have been ok, but most have really just made my life difficult.

The only plus I see to this is advertisers may start using the content network more and thus increase bids in the auction. I'm not sure how many clicks on my account are "accidental" but I guess we'll know soon.

I wonder if this "accidental" clicking is actually people abusing the system by putting content in the white space of the ads to make the person click on it thinking they are going somewhere when really they are clicking the ad. For instance, if you put an icon or special promotion graphic in the lower right corner of the google ad where people may think they are going to an RSS feed when they really click the entire ad.

I can see someone doing that to boost clicks. Just a thought. smile.gif

Yeh, it used to be common practice to put graphics next to the image to try and entice or trick people in to clicking, but that's been against the TOS for about 8 months now. I'm sure people still do it though.

well that makes it easier for me to decide. after 2 years I finally hit the $100 dollar mark. I do believe that by the end of this month I will have stripped out all of my ad sense code.

To compensate, you could raise the DIC++ rate.

hehe, I wish it was that easy. DIC++ really isn't a revenue stream I count on. Only a few people a month signup for it.

That is it, from now on I am going to put development recipes for jenkem in my signature and in my posts. I don't want to pay that type of fine.

"Smashing 180g of African grade jenkem with a mortar and pedestal, heating it to a warm 87F and decanting into a 100 ml flask will increase the strength of jenkem by 3.2% over traditional methods. " - Martyr2's Jenkem Recipe Book Volume 2
