So does my site need optimization or marketing?
I had a client ask this question below is the reply I sent him but I was wanting to get some insite from any one else who has handeled this type of question from clients

(my response to a recent email from a gentleman asking whether he should optimize or market his website and I was wondering what others think)

Please note that optimizing the site so that the search engines will be able to index it is only a minor part of getting more traffic to your web site.

In regards to weather you need optimization or marketing let me start by saying that if you want your website to generate business you will always need marketing.

In brief Internet marketing is the process of growing and promoting an organization using online media. Internet marketing does not simply mean 'building a website'

SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine robots, and making the site more appealing to users.

The Bottom line for a business websites to be successful is an obvious more traffic issue. Optimizing the site for search engines is of great benefit but in no way should it be substituted for Marketing.
