you might wanna get in touch with colleges who do game design courses, i am doing the game system programming side at my college but there are a lot of modellers who i think would really enjoy working on games. you have to make sure you get the right people because a lot of them have only been modelling really high poly things for animations.
but if they can model to a good degree then they should be able to tone it down a bit, i had one of the 3d students from my class make the character for my game and it turned out great, i also have a 3d student very interested in animation working on the animation side of things. And if there models do turn out stupidly high poly then you can reduce them in maya until they are realistic in poly count, which is what i ended up having to do.
a really high poly model that has near perfect geometry and topology doesnt lose much during this process, a lot of 3d students will model anything and i think theyd be especially pleased to see there models moving in game in real-time, i know the people i worked with did

so ring/email some local colleges im sure youll find the right person for the job, most have noticeboards so students interested can get in touch with you.
hope thats of some help, for professionals i dont have a clue :s
