Does pressing ALT + CTRL + DEL do anything?

Can you move the pointer?

Do you use the login screen? If not it could simply be case of explorer not loading (for whatever reason)..

It also might help if you posted what hardware this is on, and maybe a little more information about your install. smile.gif

How long have you let it run before turning it off when it does this? It may just be that the computer hasn't loaded the GUI yet (that is noramlly the reason for the console type window, or it could be booting in a safe mode or something to that effect). The problem may just be that you aren't being patient enough for it to load.

There could be two main problems with your computer.

Firstly, and the most likely, is that your RAM is at fault. You may have a slight fault in a RAM module that is causing this error when it attempts to load certain boot files into RAM and then finds one of them corrupted, it hangs.

Secondly, it could be that you're hard drive has faults. And while this is usually determined during the installation section of the operating system, there are the occasional time where they are not picked up. When the computer attempts to read from these bad sectors it will also hand.
