Both languages are very powerful and well supported, so there is no 'the best' language, there is a language that fits your needs. It all depends on what are you planning to do.

Pixel is absolutely right. It all depends on what your goals are and what your problem is. But if you are looking for cross platform compatibility, then Java is your choice. However both are excellent languages and I use them both a lot.

well the first real language i learned was java... later i learned C#. They resemble each other strongly, but my opinion is that C# is a stronger language.

But if you like to make java applets for on websites, you go for java. For applications however C# is better (my opinion of course)

I hear this question being asked all the time. Each langauge has its pro's and con's depending on what you are trying to accomplish. It's like asking

Which is the best language:

Prolog
ML
LISP
Fortran
Fortress
C#
C
C++
Java
blah blah...
