This is something that is of interest of me, because websites seem so static nowadays. They stick to using one sense, instead of immersing the user in as many as possible.
However, I think web designers tend to stay away from music because certain elitists don't think it's very professional, so on and so forth. But ego's aside, do you actually mind/like music on websites? Please explain why you chose your answer.
Reason for this topic is that I'm interested in putting in some music on my blog (background music). Only thing is, I know it will interfere with videos. I could see if there would be ways of disabling the music on mouse over of a div or something, I dunno. http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Q...LinkElementID_5 .. interesting.

1st question : Definite NO. You have to consider your audience. Not all people have super-fast access to the internet. it annoys me when I open a website and the song only plays halfway because it still haven't been fully streamed. another reason is because I always have my windows media player playing on the background while browsing through the internet. I don't like whatever music, no matter how good, from an unknown website interfere with my fav music.
2nd question : depends. as long as it does not interfere too much with my music player, 2 seconds of sound effect will not affect me much.
I don't like sound effects or music on web sites. I always have Windows media player going, and any music playing annoys me. If there going to put music on a web site fine, but don't make it automatically start. If I want to play the music I will click to play it.
Like web sites like imeem and yahoo music, I don't mind because it's music that I want to hear. I don't like when web sites play random music because it interferes with my music player.
The automatic music is what makes MySpace so damned annoying. Granted, I have music on my MySpace, but you know... if everyone else jumps off a cliff.....
Bottom line, I hate sound effects on websites. I'm more likely to close the browser then look at the site - just to make the noise stop.
If the website is made in Flash and has an easy enterface to mute the music then it is okay if it automatically starts playing. I normally have my speakers turned off anyway so it doesn't matter to me.
One thing I hate is when sites use sound effects for thing like menu items or something. I can't stand the browser making additional little pings or pops. Music is only okay because it doesn't repeat the same annoying sound over and over (at least most of it doesn't).

Tip for the future, don't mention you have a Myspace page here or you will be eaten alive by the cannibal moderators. They love to hate MySpace people.

I like my pages with content, not unrequested intrusion. If you have a sound bite, background noise, streaming video, flash thingy, whatever, that you believe I'll find informative or helpful, give me a choice. Sometimes I like to hear some music, but if it just fires up on me without my asking, usually drowning out what I was already engaged in, well, that's just damn rude.
Nothing will get me to leave a site faster than sound effects. If its information I must have, then I'll mute the computer sound and generally be in a bad mood.
Lol, well I got my answer. It seemed to work ok in MySpace imo (because everyone used it), and there was an ability to easily turn it off, but yeah, most of the time I just turn my speakers right down when there are gangsta ladies singing and there is no way of stopping them.
