OK. So I have vague amibtions of someday making a browser game (yes - I realise itīs not gonna happen, but it might be fun to try)

So I want to learn a server side scripting language. I've found some good tutorials (w3schools etc), and I can always get a book, but I have no idea how I can practice server side programming. (I can practise Javascipt easy enough - stick some code in a page & see if it does what I want it to..) I need some way to learn by doing..

Q Can I set up my desktop to act as server? (and if so, how?)

Iīve read topics on this, and the answer always seems to be - find a cheap hosting company, but i just want a chance to practice some coding, itīs not like iīll produce anything useful anytime soon...

Windows XP Pro - can't find disc to intall ISS or whatever it is..

Can anyone help?

Yeah do a google search for XAMPP, or WAMP or something like that. Then you just have to extract, install and run. smile.gif

Here you go: http://portableapps.com/apps/development/xampp

Extract to C:\xampp and run start_xampp.exe and place your html files in c:\xampp\htdocs smile.gif

Then access them at http://localhost/yourfile.php smile.gif

Easiest way to practise PHP is to just make random things with it. How about a very simple text version of the browser game you want to create someday?

I tried installing xampp and when I try to open up the PHP index file (came with the installation) it opens in a browser and has text reading "Something is wrong with the XAMPP installation :-(". I've tried installing and uninstalling it several times. It reports no errors during installation also? What's wrong?

XAMPP's always been kinda iffy with me. It'll work sometimes and then other times it won't. Try WAMP and see if you have better results with that.

You should find maybe a book to practice PHP. For example, I have one book PHP 5 Professional Projects, translated into Bulgarian, but it s a foreign edition, so you can look for it. Otherwise, you can use any book for PHP that explains the basics of the language. There is one rule: The more you practise, the better you become smile.gif.

P.S Here is the book: http://www.amazon.com/PHP-Professional-Pro...d/dp/1931841535
