Start study C and C++, Assembler. That's all. After you learn this languages, you must understood how computer works, how software work with hardware. After that you must write drivers for all your devices. Next you must write a something like user interface smile.gif But you will need a lot of time smile.gif

The easier way is after study C/C++, download linux kernel and start working on it.

Or the easiest just download one completed distribution of linux (like Ubuntu, Knoppix and etc).

I offer you, try the the easiest way, it is better smile.gif

It's not ridiculous at all.
Most Computer Science Courses include an Operating Systems paper which teaches you how to build your own OS.
