What DNS Software package would you use and why?

Also, i asked my SE professor and he didn't seem sure if you could use a single computer as a DNS server and a HTTP/FTP/etc server.

Can you?

This is a typical setup for Linux servers. You can pack as many services onto one machine as you care to.

However, if the resources start to grow thin, then you start putting services onto their own machine.

DNS is one services that I have yet to setup on our servers. So I outsource our DNS to EveryDNS, which has it's own advantages & disadvantages. I've looked into FreeBSD Bind, but have yet to really sink my teeth in.

Thanks no2pencil that cleared some problems up.


If you don't mind me asking what are you working on, that would require you to control your own DNS server?
I'm only using mine on a lan with one server and a extra computer to test some stuff out.

Web hosting / Email.

Having an internal DNS server would allow the reverse DNS resolution to answer correctly.
